Platelet Rich Plasma
The treatment procedure
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been widely used as an effective treatment to stimulate hair growth in people suffering from hair loss or thinning hair. The following steps explain how PRP works in this process:
Consultation and evaluation
The first step is to make an appointment with a specialist in trichology or hair dermatology. The professional will assess the condition of the scalp, determine the cause of the hair loss and determine whether PRP treatment is suitable for the patient.
Blood collection
During the consultation, a small amount of blood will be taken from the patient. Normally, a sample of around 20 to 60ml of blood is taken, similar to what would be taken for routine laboratory tests.
Blood processing
The collected blood is then processed in a specialized centrifuge. This process allows the platelet-rich plasma to be separated from the other blood components, such as red and white blood cells. Plasma is the liquid part of the blood that contains platelets and growth factors.
PRP preparation
The platelet-rich plasma obtained is carefully prepared for application to the scalp.
PRP application
PRP is injected directly into the scalp in specific areas of hair loss or thinning hair. The professional uses fine needles to perform the injections, making the procedure relatively painless.
Stimulation of hair growth
Platelet-rich plasma contains a high concentration of growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β). These growth factors have the ability to stimulate the cells of the hair follicle, promoting the growth of new hairs and strengthening existing ones.
Additional sessions
Treatment with PRP to stimulate hair growth usually involves multiple sessions, carried out every few weeks. The number of sessions required may vary according to the patient’s condition and response to treatment.
