Periodontology is a specialty of dentistry dedicated to the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pathologies affecting the tissues that surround and support the teeth: gums, alveolar bone and periodontal ligaments.

Periodontology’s main objective is to preserve patients’ oral health. In addition to preventing, diagnosing and treating periodontal diseases, this specialty is also responsible for aesthetic gum treatment. This can include periodontal surgery, root straightening, gum grafts and bone regeneration, depending on the progression of the disease.

It should be noted that periodontal health contributes to overall oral health, because healthy teeth depend on healthy gums and strong periodontal tissues.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease refers to a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the periodontium, i.e. everything that surrounds and supports the teeth, such as the gums, alveolar bone and periodontal ligaments.

Periodontal disease can be divided into two pathologies: gingivitis and periodontitis.

What are periodontal diseases?

Periodontal disease usually stems from gingivitis, which if not properly treated can develop into periodontitis.

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums caused by bacterial build-up and tartar around the teeth, i.e. it only affects one part of the periodontium.

Periodontitis is a disease caused by the progression of gingivitis, which in turn affects the entire periodontal structure and can lead to to permanent tooth loss. É an oral pathology that progressively destroys the periodontal tissue and the loss of the bone structure that surrounds and supports the teeth.
